Developing pattern-making systems from research data

Daniele Orlandi's research idea, "Trasformare il progetto in realtà" ("Turning the project into reality"), advocates for developing and updating pattern-making systems using new research together with anthropometric measurements and ergonomic data. Selected through an open call, it was published in "Fare ricerca in design" (Il Poligrafo, 2017), the proceedings of the second national forum of Italian design PhD programmes, hosted at Università Iuav di Venezia on 25-26 February 2016.

About the contribution

The forum, founded in 2013 by Raimonda Riccini — associate professor at Iuav and vice-director of its doctoral school — brings together Italy's design PhD programmes every two years in Venice. Ahead of the 2016 edition, contributors were invited to submit a short research idea alongside a poster; 23 proposals were selected for inclusion in the resulting volume. Orlandi's contribution appears on page 423 within the "Idee di ricerca" (Research Ideas) chapter and credited under three keywords: Innovazione (Innovation), Know-how, Interpolazione.(Interpolation).

The published text outlines the core idea behind his practice: fashion design is, at its core, a form of structural construction with pattern-making (modellistica) serving as its primary engine — his proposal advocates for modernizing traditional garment construction methods by integrating updated anthropometric and ergonomic research data.

His contribution shared the page with three other design proposals—covering fashion photography archives, territorial mediation tools, and biomimetics — part of a volume whose broad academic framework spans from material innovation, digital technology, cultural heritage, communication design, and fashion itself.
