Hemp Sailcloth Accessories
Our “Marina” collection is a selection of accessories all handcrafted in Como by our atelier using a very special sailcloth made of 100% Italian hemp fivers.
A durable, high-quality natural material produced by an Italian textile manufacturer and commissioned for the sails of the training ship “Amerigo Vespucci,” the pride of the Italian Navy considered one of the most beautiful ships in the world.
This fabric showcases the outstanding know-how of a local mill founded in the 19th century and still family owned. Committed to excellence, it specialises in heavyweight fabrics in natural fibres and is renewed for its expertise and the quality of products.
The sails
“Amerigo Vespucci” is a sailing vessel of the Italian Navy carrying 24 sails made of linen and hemp. A vessel built in 1931 which serves primarily for training Naval Academy cadets but also for representing the whole country worldwide during diplomatic cruises.
Its sails made of linen and hemp are crafted through labour-intensive processes that honours traditional maritime techniques. The fabric is specifically commissioned in different thickness to suit the different requirements. Strips of the the sailcloth are manually assembled together to create the sails hand sewing thousands of stitches.
As you’ll see on the fabric the blue lines which run parallel to the selvedge are purposely woven to serve as reference during the assembly of the sails.
The collection
Inspired by organic architecture and design, these accessories evoke a natural universe with mineral-minimal textures and softly vibrating natural tones. An essence of simplicity deeply rooted in materiality, nature and tradition.
Each meter is slightly different evoking the beauty of uniqueness together with a special narrative. An extremely strong and durable fabric which is able to propel a 4.100-ton ship handling extreme stresses during ocean crossings. Thanks to its structure and thickness it is furthermore able to resist the penetration of water to some degree.
