Non Violent Silk - Ethical Luxury
Minimalist designs crafted using organic silks in Ahimsa quality.
Ahimsa silk, also frequently referred to as peace silk, cruelty-free silk, or non-violent silk, is a type of textile produced using methods that allow the metamorphosis of the silkworm to a butterfly to be completed so that the animal has not to be killed. Ahimsa silk is predominantly produced on a very small scale in India, deeply rooted in religious and ethical principles.
Unlike conventional silk production where the larvae inside the cocoon are killed so that the silk can be reeled off in a single thread while, ahimsa silk is made from cocoons that have been broken or opened. Only after the moth has hatched and departed the empty cocoon is processed into silk yarn. This necessitates a spun yarn.
This production method is thus slower and more laborious—often resulting in greater material loss—but the resulting fabric has unique functional and textural qualities. Beautiful fabrics with lively textures, mostly in natural colours that are strong and easy to care.
Furthermore, some of our peace silk fabrics used are produced under organic standards, where mulberry trees are grown without pesticides or fungicides or GMO products.
